SYEP - The Summer Youth Employment Program
The New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) invests in a network of community-based organizations and programs to alleviate the effects of poverty and to provide opportunities for New Yorkers and communities to flourish.

Provides NYC youth between the ages of 14 and 24 with paid summer employment for up to six weeks.

SYEP Community-Based Program – Career Exploration & Paid Work Experience
The SYEP Community-Based option provides New York City youth (ages 16–24) with career exploration opportunities and paid work experience each summer. This program is an exciting way to gain real-world job experience, develop professional skills, and earn money while making a meaningful impact in the community.
Participants are selected through a randomized lottery, ensuring fair access to this opportunity.

What is SYEP?
The Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) is the nation’s largest youth employment program, connecting young people across NYC with structured, work-based learning experiences to help them prepare for future careers.
Through a combination of hands-on work experiences and project-based learning, participants develop essential professional skills, explore career pathways, and gain valuable industry exposure.
What the Program Offers

Who Can Apply?
SYEP is open to NYC youth who meet the following requirements:
  • Young people, age 16 to 24 may apply online
  • Some service options may have additional eligibility requirements
  • Must be a resident of one of the five boroughs in NYC
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States

CareerREADY SYEP – Preparing NYC Youth for the Future
The CareerREADY SYEP Program offers enhanced career exploration and work readiness opportunities for NYC youth. Designed to strengthen connections between academic learning and career exploration, the program equips participants with critical 21st-century skills, including problem-solving, team building, and analytical reasoning.
Program Highlights
SYEP gives youth a unique opportunity to explore their interest and discover new ones through:
  • Career Exploration & Work Readiness
    Participants gain valuable workplace experience while developing essential job skills.
  • School-Year & Summer Components
    Select NYC public high schools and SYEP contractors collaborate to offer a structured, career-focused program throughout the year.
  • Tailored Career Preparation
    Programs are designed to fit students’ career interests and provide industry-specific exposure.
Eligibility & Program Options
SYEP is open to NYC youth who meet the following requirements:
  • 📌 Ages 14–15: Engage in paid, project-based learning experiences to explore career pathways
  • 📌 Ages 16–24: Apply for paid summer jobs in diverse industries across NYC.
Program Requirements
  • Selection is school-based – students are chosen by participating NYC Department of Education (DOE) schools rather than through the standard online SYEP lottery.
  • Customized programming – schools and SYEP providers work together to align the program with the school’s focus and students’ career interests.
  • Work Readiness Training – students receive comprehensive training before starting their summer experience.
  • Must attend a DOE-approved school – Listed below

SYEP Emerging Leaders Program – Empowering NYC’s Most Vulnerable Youth
The SYEP Emerging Leaders Program provides meaningful employment opportunities for New York City youth (ages 14–24) who face significant barriers to employment. This program is designed to support and empower young people through work-based learning experiences, offering them a pathway to success.

Through strategic agency partnerships, Emerging Leaders helps participants navigate life’s challenges by equipping them with career readiness skills, mentorship, and employment opportunities tailored to their unique needs.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for the Emerging Leaders Program, applicants must:
  • Be a resident of one of NYC’s five boroughs
  • Be legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Be referred by an affiliated agency support staff
  • Face at least one of the following employment barriers:
    • Homeless or runaway youth (residing in shelters)
    • Justice-involved or court-involved youth
    • Youth in or aging out of foster care
    • Youth receiving preventive services through NYC’s Administration for Children’s Services (ACS)
Referral Partners & Special Services

Eligible youth must receive a direct referral from their support agency. Special partners include:

📌 DOE District 75 (D75): Specialized education services

📌 DOE District 79 (D79): Alternative education pathways

📌 DOE-LYFE Program: Services for young parents in school

📌 End Domestic & Gender-Based Violence: Support for survivors

📌 NYC Human Resources Administration (HRA): Youth receiving cash assistance via Business Link

📌 Runaway & Homeless Youth Services
