The HANAC East-West Connection Senior Transportation Program provides transportation to senior citizens who reside in Community Districts 1 (Steinway, Astoria), 2 (LIC, Woodside, Sunnyside), 3 (Jackson Heights, Elmhurst), 4 (Elmhurst, Corona) & 7 (Whitestone, Clearview, Malba, Beechurst, Flushing, and parts of Bayside) in Queens County.
The administrative and managerial capabilities of our organization are reputed to be among the best in its field. HANAC, Inc. has operated a transportation program for the elderly since 1984. It started as a small program with one vehicle serving a few seniors in a small area in Astoria, Queens. It has grown to a program that has 8 buses, with 5 scheduled routes and provides over 38,000 one-way trips a year with over 900 registered clients in five Community Districts in Queens County.
We have two types of transportation services. Our van service transports seniors to and from senior centers (where they will receive a nutritional meal), local banking, group shopping, local medical appointments, bowling clubs, walking clubs, pool clubs in summer, museums and various social activities. After a driver completes their morning drops offs to the senior center, they then do group trips with senior housing developments and senior centers. We also have private car service program for medical appointments at 50% of the car cost.
A person must be 60 years of age or older, physically or geographically handicapped and they must reside in Community Districts 1, 2, 3, 4 or 7 in Queens County. A client will receive transportation as they need it and as often as space and budget dollars allow.
Our hours of operation are 6:00 am to 3:30 pm. Our office is open from 6:00 am to 2:00 pm. We are open Monday through Friday, 250 days of the year. As of January 6, 2017, we have a total of 1059 clients (652 van clients and 459 car service clients).
We have 8 wheelchair accessible vans. We have 5 scheduled routes. We also share one of our buses with a HANAC Norc program. We have five full-time drivers and two sub-drivers. We also contract out two car service companies for the private car service component. We do annual Drug and Alcohol screenings and driver abstracts for our drivers
