English as a Second Language (ESL)

The program serves the large multi-ethnic immigrant and refugee population that reside in Western Queens. The program operates from September through June with classes meeting Monday through Thursday from 6pm-9pm. Students attend 2 evenings per week.

The classes offer oral and written English instruction for ESL literacy and can accommodate any level of proficiency from those with virtually no literacy skills to those with advanced levels of English language proficiency.  The program focuses on oral language acquisition, integrating various methods of instruction appropriate for each level such as Basic Literacy, Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced. Instruction is enhanced through the use of computer technology in the classroom.

Pre-High School Equivalency (HSE) and HSE Programs in English and Spanish

The HANAC pre-HSE® and the HSE programs are offered in English in Astoria at IS204 and at the HANAC Education Center in Manhattan to any individual who is pursuing a New York State High School Equivalency Diploma. The pre-HSE and HSE instructions are available in the evenings from 6pm-9pm from September through June. The Spanish HSE classes are held at PS19 in Corona.

Registration for classes is on-going every Wednesday and Thursday from 5pm-8pm.
